Questions Parents Ask

If your question is not answered here, our admissions team will be glad to help.

At what ages can my child join?

The main points of entry are 11+ (Year 7), 13+ (Year 9) and 16+ (Lower Sixth). We also have a smaller number of places at 12+ and 14+, and occasional places in other year groups.

Is the school co-educational?

Yes. Boys and girls are taught together throughout the school, and board in separate houses or separate wings.

From what age can my child board?

Boarding is available from Year 7, age 11. Families can choose full, weekly or flexi boarding, and many pupils change their arrangement as they grow.

Can day pupils try boarding?

Yes. Day pupils can flexi board for one to three nights a week, subject to space, and younger pupils can book a Boarding Taster Night.

How selective is the school?

We look for pupils who will thrive in a busy, academic school and make the most of the opportunities here. Assessments look at potential and character as well as current attainment, and every applicant is interviewed.

How large are classes?

Classes in Years 7 to 11 are typically no larger than 18, and Sixth Form groups are smaller still.

What support is there for pupils with learning needs?

Our learning support team helps pupils with specific learning difficulties and other needs that can be met in a mainstream school. Please share any assessments when you apply so we can discuss support openly.

What happens if my child is homesick?

Houseparents watch carefully for the signs, especially in the first weeks, and act early. New boarders have a house buddy, a settling-in plan and regular calls home. Most children settle quickly.

How do you keep in touch with parents?

Through regular reports and parents’ evenings, a weekly newsletter, the parent portal, and direct contact with your child’s tutor and, for boarders, their houseparent.

Is there a uniform?

Yes. Uniform and sports kit are available from the school’s supplier, and a second-hand uniform shop is run by our parents’ association.

Do you offer transport?

Details of school transport for day pupils, and airport transfers for boarders, are available from the admissions team.

How do I apply for a bursary?

Register your child and request a bursary application form from the Bursar. Bursaries are means-tested and confidential. See our scholarships and bursaries page for details.
